Genesee County Literacy Coalition (GCLC) is thrilled to announce Kylee Watson as the recipient of the 2024 Danielle Brown Scholarship. Kylee was nominated by Success Virtual Learning Centers for her exceptional hard work and unwavering commitment to her goals.

Kylee is an inspiring young adult who balances a

full-time job while raising her two young daughters. Recently married, she has demonstrated remarkable determination throughout the school year. Kylee aspires to become a nurse and is already taking steps towards her goal by working at a healthcare facility. Her desire to inspire her children drives her to succeed, and she is proud of graduating high school while managing all of these responsibilities.

Kylee's hobbies include cooking, singing, and being a mother. While motherhood consumes most of her time, singing has been a passion since she was 13 years old; she enjoys singing her heart out! One of the biggest struggles she encountered throughout her school career was dealing with her dad's addiction. Despite this, she remains determined to keep her head up and continue with her life plan to become a nurse.

Kylee's advice to other students is to keep pushing: "If you don't save yourself, no one else will. Nobody will hold your hand throughout life, and nobody will catch you when you fall. You have to want it for yourself."

Kylee plans to continue her education by pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). She is now enrolled at Mott Community College to begin the pre-nursing program. She shared that receiving the Danielle Brown Scholarship will significantly support her academic journey and help her to take the next steps towards her goal. Kylee expressed that this scholarship not only holds immense value for her but also for her daughters, who admire strong women like Danielle Brown.

On June 6, GCLC presented Kylee with a $1,000 scholarship and a technology bundle to assist her in her educational endeavors. Kylee's dedication and perseverance make her a deserving recipient of this scholarship, and we are excited to see her continue to excel and inspire others.

Congratulations, Kylee Watson! The Genesee County Literacy Coalition is proud to support you in your journey towards becoming a nurse and a role model for your daughters.

Do you know an outstanding High School or GED graduate?

GCLC is now seeking nominations for the 2024 Danielle Brown Scholarship!

This yearly scholarship was initiated in 2021 after our community experienced the devastating loss of GCLC’s esteemed Chairperson, Danielle Brown. As a champion for literacy, Danielle Brown led the Coalition with a vision and a passion for anyone without a voice and we are committed to continuing her mission forward.

In honor of Danielle Brown’s memory, GCLC selects one student each year to receive the Danielle Brown Scholarship. The recipient will be awarded a $1,000 scholarship toward the next step of their education. Other candidates will receive recognition and GCLC will strive to provide support for all through our community partners.

Former scholarship winners include MaKenzi Hodo of Powers Catholic High School, Deaven Walker of Grand Blanc High School, and Suranjan Hardy of Success Virtual Learning Centers of Michigan.
