Since the Coalition’s beginning, it has evolved into a network of Adult Learning Centers providing a variety of literacy services and supports such Adult Basic Education, English as a Second Language (ESL), Workforce Readiness, GED Testing and Preparation, services for At Risk Youth, and services for K-12 youth. GCLC is a volunteer organization that is sustained by membership fees, fundraising, grants, and donations.
In honor of the late Danielle Brown (former GCLC Chair) a yearly Danielle Brown Scholarship recipient receives a scholarship of up to $1,000 towards their education upon completing High School or obtaining their GED. GCLC’s Adult Learning Centers Virtual Learning Project was launched in 2020 during the COVID-19 shut down to address the immediate need for technology. The Genesee County Literacy Coalition is extremely grateful to James Bermingham, President of Diploma Options, LLC for the generous donation of $1,200.00 to purchase four “Technology Bundles” for an Adult Learner participating in any of the Genesee County Literacy Coalition’s five Adult Learning Center Providers in Flint.
We recognize having access to technology is an important and necessary tool in the 21st Century. Removing this barrier for someone without access, striving to achieve a personal academic goal is invaluable.
Since December 2020, the Genesee County Literacy Coalition focus has been to provide Adult Learners living in Flint and Genesee County with necessary technology tools, such as a 14” Chromebook, Wireless Mouse, Mouse Pad, Headphones, and a Power Strip; hence the “Technology Bundle” evolved. The goal of GCLC is to address the “digital divide” impacting many seniors and the disenfranchised residents of our community.
As the Genesee County Literacy Coalition continues to impact literacy outcomes for adults and youth living in Flint and Genesee County, we appreciate James Bermingham and Diploma Options for supporting our efforts and joining us in the fight.
