Founded in 1989, Genesee County Literacy Coalition (GCLC) goal is improving literacy for Adult Learners and families living in Flint and Genesee County. Over the years, GCLC has grown into a Coalition of Adult Learning Centers offering programs with one-to-one tutoring services such as Adult Basic Education, English as a Second Language (ESL), Workforce Readiness, GED Testing and Preparation, and support for At-Risk Youth. GCLC is a volunteer-driven organization supported by membership fees, fundraising, small grants, and donations.

GCLC demonstrated its commitment to bridging the “digital divide” with the launch of the “Virtual Learning Project” in 2020, which equipped Adult Learners with essential tools and technology to overcome learning barriers and continue learning through COVID-19 and beyond. To date, GCLC has provided over two hundred “Technology Bundles” to Adult Learners of Flint and Genesee County. The “Technology Bundle” includes a 14” Chromebook, Headphones, Wireless Mouse, Mouse Pad and Power strip.

The creation of the Danielle Brown Scholarship established in 2021, awarding annually $1,000 scholarships to outstanding Adult Learner graduates. The award also includes a “Technology Bundle.” To date four graduates have received this scholarship and GCLC is now accepting nominations for 2025.
